Iron Infusions
Is an iron infusion right for me?
Ferinject (Ferric Carboxymaltose) is a type of iron supplement which is delivered directly into the vein by infusion. This can sometimes be used instead of iron tablets.
Some reasons why Ferinject is used:
You have iron deficiency or iron deficiency anaemia, have symptoms relating to this and have been unable to tolerate iron orally.
You have tried oral iron medication and it hasn’t helped.
You have recently had a baby and have significant anaemia.
You were offered a blood transfusion and declined this.
There are some potential side effects of iron infusions which occur in up to 10% of patients.
Headache
Dizziness
Rash
Nausea and/or Vomiting
Abdominal pain
Muscle cramps
Diarrhoea and/or constipation
Flushing
Low or high blood pressure
Localised reactions at the injection site
Low phosphate levels which may require IV or oral replacement
In particular one of the rare complications of an iron infusion is something called iron staining or tattooing. This is where the iron medication leaks under the skin and causes a staining or discolouration of the skin. If this does occur laser treatment might help but sometimes it is permanent and cannot be ressolved.
Please do not book an iron infusion without first having a consultation with a GP to discuss suitability. GPs within the clinic who offer iron infusions include:
Dr Jenny
Dr Jo
Dr Ivana
